Session Styling Guide- Tips From a Camrose Photographer

How should we dress? This is a question I get SO often. Sometimes styling can be the most stressful part of a shoot, especially for moms who are preparing for family sessions. With the goal to create ease, I have created a style guide with some tips & tricks. #1 tip is to be comfortable. Dress like yourself. If you never wear dresses, please do not feel the Pinterest pressure to dress a certain way. It will distract you and pull you out of the moment. With that in mind, let’s get in to it!

#2. Neutrals are your friend, creating a timeless look. Avoid any vibrant colors/patterns as they will reflect on to skin tones and distract from the emotions of the moment.

#3. Textures such as cable knit, linen, and lace can help add dimension and photograph beautifully without pulling attention away from you.

#4. Think seasonally. Winter sessions with hats, jackets, knits in blues, pinks or browns will photograph well and have a cozy feel. Summer sessions are best with flowy fabrics that create movement like lace, muslin and linen.

#5. Think complimentary. Avoid matching each other because if everyone is wearing all white, the gallery will resemble white blobs. I advise families to choose mom’s outfit and build everyone else’s around it.

#6. Back to comfort. An ill-fitting outfit or under garment will have you are constantly making adjustments and create self-consciousness that will show in the resulting images. If you cannot wait to get home to your sweat pants, you are wearing the wrong outfit.

#7. Accessorize! Jewellery, hats, scarfs and jackets can add visual interest and add variety to your gallery when you add/remove them.

#8. Get sentimental! Include baby blankets, instruments, handmaid items that mean a lot to you. You won’t regret seeing them 20 years from now when you look back.
